2000년 데뷔 앨범 한 장으로 영국
의 평단을 주목하게 했던 포크 아티스트 톰 멕레.
Tom McRae (2000) 앨범의 You Cut Her Hair는
그에게 영국 최고 권위 '머큐리 음악상'을 수상하게 했다.
단촐한 악기 편성과 독특한 윤기의 음색만으로 폐부를 파고드는 톰 맥레의 음악은
어느덧 작은 흐름으로 자리잡은
포크팝 (엘리엇 스미스, 벨 앤 세바스찬 등) 류라는 이유로 주목받은 듯 하지만
우울함이나 낭만으로 승부를 거는 최근 몇몇 뮤지션들과는
본질적으로 다른 차별성을 갖고 있다.

본인이 직접 연주한 어쿠스틱 기타와 현악 4중주 반주가
앨범 전체를 감싸며 곡의 전반적인 분위기를 나타내지만,
내면의 느낌은 말랑말랑한 우울함이나 서정적인 낭만보다는
삶에 대한 날선 증오와 직설적인 분노에 가깝다.
적당히 아련하고 모호한 가사가 아닌 공격적인 분노로 가득 찬
직설적인 가사 (The Boy With The Bubblegun)와 보컬은
포크팝보다는 제프 버클리의 소울풀한 비장미에 가깝다.
삶과 음악에 대한 이성적인 성찰을 느낄 수 있는 이런 음악은
음악보다는 감수성이 먼저 다가온다.
닉 드레이크와 비교되는 그의 진짜 매력도 사실은 그 때문이다.
